Control and automation systems in modern ships and offshore equipment are complex and highly integrated. The trend towards more sophisticated vessels with electric propulsion and complex specialist deck equipment produces systems with high levels of interdependency and often ‘hidden’ failure modes. 

Often large projects are delivered by multiple vendors and equipment manufacturers which requires a very close focus on interface engineering to ensure compatibility, standardisation and predicable performance.
